My story
Josef grew up on his family’s dairy farm in a little village in the heart of Bavaria, Southern Germany. At the young age of 14 he, against his family’s expectations, decided to not take over the family business, but instead to pursue his dream of becoming a master carpenter.
At that point he had been designing and building his own wooden creations for quite some time, and felt it was time to take the leap.
His instincts and passion for the craft earned him an apprenticeship at one of the most reputable wooden home building companies in the country, the Isartaler Holzhaus. During his 32 years with the company he rose from apprentice to Master Carpenter and finally to Head of Carpentry.
In 2012, another dream came true, when he and his wife, Claudia, packed their belongings and made their way to Nova Scotia, Canada. Only two years later he opened his own carpentry business—Painted Sky Carpentry—named after the stunning sunsets that ‘paint the sky’ at his home and workshop near Bridgewater.
